CO2e credits
A carbon credit is equivalent to one tonne of carbon dioxide reduced or avoided by the financing of a project for climate change.

Greenhouse gases (GHG)
Greenhouse gases are gases responsible for global warming: they absorb part of the sun’s rays by redistributing them in the form of radiation in the earth’s atmosphere, a phenomenon known as "greenhouse effect." More than forty greenhouse gases have been identified by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). CO2e is the main greenhouse gas of anthropogenic origin generated in particular by the burning of fossil fuels (oil, coal) and biomass.

CO2 equivalent
There are several types of greenhouse gases, not only carbon dioxide, and all greenhouse emissions can be transposed into CO2 equivalent. Bearing in mind that each greenhouse gas has a lower or higher global warming potential compared to CO2, it is necessary to apply a specific coefficient on the gas in question to convert the tonne into a tonne of CO2 equivalent, in order to find out the equivalence of a tonne of greenhouse gas in terms of carbon credits. This makes it possible to compare the contribution of these different gases to the warming of the planet and to take account of them in the efforts to reduce the carbon impact of an organisation or a product.

Standard(s)
This term refers to the set of requirements relative to the quality of the carbon credits generated by projects to reduce or sequester GHG. They are defined by recognised organisations such as the Gold Standard or VERRA which work in consultation with different stakeholders on the carbon market. Compliance with the requirements set by the standards is ensured by the certification bodies which assess the projects and give their opinion on their compliance.

The 2 types of international standards Greentripper works with are:

• Gold Standard projects: projects that generate carbon credits corresponding to voluntary emission reductions (VER) that follow the strict criteria of the Gold Standard Foundation. Gold Standard projects have a holistic approach because in addition to greenhouse gas reduction, they pay attention to the economic, social and environmental impact of projects. CO2logic works for 99.7% (2017 percentage) with VER projects.
• Verified Carbon Standard (VCS): A project that delivers verified carbon units (VCU); the most widely used standard in the world which has certified more than 1,300 projects, which generate more than 200 million tonnes of carbon credits.
  
  In both cases, the project must demonstrate that it contributes to at least three SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).
